Feeding your Tortoise- Part I
A tortoises diet is much debated amongst tortoise keepers. There is, as with most subjects, a lot of conflicting information about the correct diet for tortoises. The subject is often over-complicated, however by following some simple guidelines and using common sense, it is simple to give your tortoise the correct diet.
The main rule of thumb for creating the perfect diet is to choose a natural diet that would be available in the wild. A high calcium to phosphorous ratio is essential and is easily provided very cheaply (or even free In most cases.) by choosing natural ‘weeds’ and plants.
There are a number of weeds available in the UK for most of the summer and these are easily found if you take a walk through a field or a local park. However, if picking weeds from a public park then it is advisable that you phone your local council to ask if they use weed killer.
It is advisable that you do not pick weeds from a location which:
• Is sprayed with weed Killer
• Is frequented by dogs which may urinate on the weeds
• Is next to a busy road where the fumes could contaminate the weeds
• Is on private property
As an alternative to picking weeds, some owners prefer to grow them. This is especially useful if you are overwintering a tortoise and there is not enough food growing naturally, or if you live in an area without sufficient weed picking opportunities.
As well as transplanting suitable weeds and propagating them, you can purchase specially made seed mixes. There are a number of mixes available from online suppliers. I personally recommend that you buy the varied mixes that contain a number of different weed seeds, as any over reliance on one particular foodstuff is a recipe for disaster.
