Housing Hatchling Tortoises

Like their parents, hatchling tortoises thrive in an outdoor environment. This article describes how to create enclosures for hatchling tortoises, both indoors and out.

Housing for Hatchling Tortoises

Much like their adult counterparts, hatchling tortoises thrive in an outdoor enclosure when the British weather allows. However, because of their small size, they heat up much more quickly than adults, and as such cool down much more quickly too.

Outdoor Housing
A cage suitable for Hatchling tortoisesWhen the weather allows, hatchling tortoises can enjoy an outdoor enclosure from the day that they hatch. However, their smaller size puts them at a higher risk from bird attacks, so it is essential they are protected at all times. If you have to leave the enclosure unprotected at any time, for example cleaning, then remove the tortoises and bring them indoors.
For added protection, I keep my hatchlings in an outdoor rabbit cage. The wire cage provides protection from birds, and the plastic tray allows for a deep enough substrate.

NB: Be sure to drill plenty of drainage into the bottom of the plastic base. A plastic base will easily fill up with water during a rain shower and if there are no drainage holes there is a risk of drowning.

Another thing to consider with hatchling tortoises is that they have plenty of ground coverage to hide under and bury down under to conserve water.

Indoor Enclosure

When indoors, a hatchling tortoise needs to be kept in an open topped enclosure to allow the maximum airflow. Some keepers have success using a vivarium to raise tropical hatchlings (Such as redfoots & hingebacks.) However, for Mediterranean species, I always use an open topped enclosure as this allows for the correct amount of airflow.
For hatchling tortoises, it is recommended to have the substrate a few inches deep so that they can bury down to preserve moisture and cool down. A natural substrate such as a mixture of sand and soil is recommended, as this will be easy to keep moist. Be sure that fresh water is provided at all times, in a shallow dish that allows the hatchlings to climb in and out to bathe and drink.

NB: It is particularly important to provide a cool end, which is kept at room temperature for the tortoise to thermo regulate.
